If I put a picture more fitting with the tone of the series, it would probably contradict everything else about the blog.
Surprised? Though I’m usually not one to enjoy the general shounen/seinen genre, anywho who watched the 6 episodes of Mnemosyne would know that it’s more than a little unique. Borderline guro with tons of yuri to go around, coupled with excessive violence and an eerie, twisting plot almost reminiscent of the likes of Serial Experiments Lain, it was probably one of the most original anime of the year, and it definitely made an impact on me when I first watched it. Truth be told, I only got through it because I was forced into watching half of it at a friend’s house. That doesn’t mean that it was bad, however – on the contrary, it was probably among my most enjoyable anime-related experiences this past year.
Much like with Nogizaka Haruka, the “moment” in anime that I’m remembering in this post is more of an overall experience than a precise instant in an episode. As a person that generally steers clear of seinen and violence – the most gruesome anime I had seen before this was probably Higurashi, which is tame in comparison – it took me a while to get used to Mnemosyne’s almost ridiculous setting. It truly is an “anything goes” kind of story; you really, really never know what kind of twisted yet somehow exciting challenge will come up in the next installment. It keeps you at the edge of your seat, partially due to the high quantities of violence and fanservice and everything “bad”, but mainly due to the fact that it actually has a good story.
That’s right: an anime about immortal women, cannibalistic angels, and MILF yuri actually has a good plot.
If you’ve seen the show, you’re probably agreeing with me by now, and if you haven’t seen it, then I urge you to go do so. Even if it doesn’t sound like your cup of tea – it certainly wasn’t mind – the fact that it’s an excellent show is indeniable, and I found myself enjoying it far more than I ever expected. From the plot twists to the building anticipation as the story develops, and even to the sheer WTF-ness of it all, Mnemosyne was undoubtedly among my most vivid memories of 2008.
And if you’re looking for a specific moment to remember, I’d suggest scrolling to the end of episode 5; who could forget the moment they found out that god is a hermaphrodite?
