⑨ Moments of Anime #5: true tears ep 06

True Tears was an excellent series, blurring the line between visual novel and shoujo – much like KimiKiss – and delivering a heart-pounding love story with elements familiar to both genres. Defying all laws of harem (and apparently defying the original game’s story, as well), it proved to be one of my favourite shows of the year, no doubt due to the amount of drama built up throughout the series. Just as realism is something I often enjoy in romance (see Clannad After Story), unrealistic melodramatic stories can also be good, so long as the characters are understandable and their actions aren’t too ridiculous. To me, True Tears stood out not only because of its genre-defying developments, but also because of its plot twists, and the sixth episode is one that left me with my jaw dropped.

⑨ Moments of Anime #6: Mnemosyne no Musume-tachi

If I put a picture more fitting with the tone of the series, it would probably contradict everything else about the blog.

Surprised? Though I’m usually not one to enjoy the general shounen/seinen genre, anywho who watched the 6 episodes of Mnemosyne would know that it’s more than a little unique. Borderline guro with tons of yuri to go around, coupled with excessive violence and an eerie, twisting plot almost reminiscent of the likes of Serial Experiments Lain, it was probably one of the most original anime of the year, and it definitely made an impact on me when I first watched it. Truth be told, I only got through it because I was forced into watching half of it at a friend’s house. That doesn’t mean that it was bad, however – on the contrary, it was probably among my most enjoyable anime-related experiences this past year.

⑨ Moments of Anime #7: Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu ep 01

Not so much a precise moment as an overall experience, the first episode of this bizarre yet heartwarming little romance/comedy marked the beginning of what would become one of my favourite anime of the summer, and what has since become a far more memorable harem than most.

⑨ Moments of Anime #8: H2O – Footprints in the Sand ep 08

Remember this one? That crazy episode, right when things were getting good, where we were tossed into almost a full 22 minutes of mahou shoujo and other general nonsense that had absolutely nothing to do with the situation at hand? Well, I remember it, and I think there’s a part of me that looks back on it fondly.

⑨ Moments of Anime #9: Da Capo II Second Season ep 12

So, I’m a little more than a little late to the party, but it’s better late than never, right? Organized by CCY of Mega Megane Moe (and apparently related to the ABC?), I’ll be doing my part to contribute to this little event known as the Twelve Moments in Anime. Starting at nine (surely because I wanted to do something unique, and not because I was lazy or anything…</sarcasm>), I’ll be counting down some of my favourite moments of anime in the year 2008, celebrating the virtues of this art form that we all know and love. So, read on to hear about my first choice, involving A Certain Magical Sakura Tree.
