Move Complete

by eternal on July 27, 2009

Nothing to see here, folks. After doing a terrible job of sneaking around (as IcyStorm and Digitalboy can testify to), my domain move is complete. No, there isn’t any particular significance behind the name, and it’s a mouthful to say, but it’s vague enough that I’d feel comfortable linking anything to it – which I already have – and it doesn’t have any annoying hyphens. The other sites are still mostly under construction, but for all intents and purposes, nothing will really change around here as long as you update your bookmarks. Unfortunately, I’ve still got a nasty amount of level grinding in Real Life to contend with, but hopefully I’ll be able to return to a regular posting schedule soon.

P.S. threaded comments FTW
P.S.S. I’ll probably hit publish on that massive Honey and Clover post tomorrow morning. Don’t worry, it’ll be my last pretentious tl;dr for a while.

I don’t get it. What are you referring to?

I didn’t tell anyone that I was planning on switching domains and didn’t want it to be revealed until I was done (not that I had any real reason for keeping it secret). Despite that, though, I messed up the redirects at first and Digiboy commented on a “Hello, World” post at an empty ephemeraleternity.com, and I apparently messed up the feeds and posted a “Hello, World” note on Facebook, which you (and probably a lot of other people) noticed.

In before people not knowing what ephemeral- ah.

So, what can we expect from you from now on? New domain, new style of blogging?

Well, now that I’ve gotten over my initial excitement of being able to use big words and talk about things that most viewers don’t pay attention to, I’ll try to pull back a bit and add some variety. I’m not funny by nature and my best stuff will probably always be the SRS BSNS posts, but even within that, my goal is to give each post a meaning, rather than a 2000-word mess of thoughts that may or may not be interesting. Of course, that also means that I’ll be toying with less serious posts as well. My only real goal is to avoid the “weblog” sort of posting – the glorified not-so-micro blogging where the blogger simply records their miscellaneous thoughts – and focus on posting for a reason. That, combined with the initial goal of writing when passion strikes, should be a good combination.

When it comes down to it, though, there aren’t any major changes. It’s mostly a psychological difference on my part.

Everyone seems to be going to threaded comments. I can’t stand threaded comments. How am I supposed to know what order people are commenting in if they’re all having these little side conversations with each other that are posted out of order and non-linearly…?

It’s to make it less confusing when side conversations do go on. If you have one linear stream of comments in which separate conversations do occur, it could make it confusing as hell. You may not see a proper response to your own comment for tens or sometimes even hundreds of comments down the page. Threaded comments allows for that to happen in a more neater fashion while also allowing people to directly comment on each other’s comments or questions.

It’s all for the better, really.

AFAIR, the standard VB (and similar) forum has abandoned the threaded structure in favour of linear discussions and quoted references. It just feels like a much more inclusive way to display discussions, since you can have these side discussions but still maintain the same sense of flow of conversation, so people can enter the side discussions as freely as they can enter the conversation as a whole. It’s also more naturally susceptible to staying on-topic as well, since the conversation tends to move as one coherent entity (as opposed to something which is naturally more disjointed), and can be moved back on-topic as one as well. Threaded comments just strikes me as a step back into the past. Needless to say, I won’t be implementing them on any site I run. Just my preference.

Congrats on the secret move. At least the name is still better than mine. Epheremal, I like it.
