Ringing in 2011 with… a post

(This is the first picture I saw when I clicked on my image folder and I figured, hey, why not.)

2011 has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?

Well, no, it really doesn’t. 2010 is much easier to say and it looks cleaner when written; the 0’s create a sense of symmetry and it doesn’t force you to type the same letter twice in a row, like a jackhammer pattern in a rhythm game.

I suppose what I really want to say is that a new year is here, and that this is probably a good thing. Like all students, life revolves more around the school year than the calendar year for me so I’m not feeling particularly sentimental. Luckily for me, this year’s resolutions are hardly an issue since I wrote a bunch of them last year, and just to prove that I’m not the kind of person who says things and forgets about them, I’m going to go through that list–one by one–and evaluate my progress. Let’s hope I didn’t fail!

New Year’s Resolutions, 2010 Edition

Ten years ago I was in 2nd grade, watching Digimon on TV and trying to beat Mario Party 2. Considering that the decade started in what feels like a different universe to me, I can’t reflect on it without monotonously listing the standard life experiences that occur over such a significant ten years.

Thankfully, New Year’s Day is more about looking ahead than looking back. Without further ado, I bring to you my personal list of goals for the year, filled with as much starry-eyed dreaming and inevitable cynicism as you might expect from a self-proclaimed Passionate Anime Fan™ who spent New Year’s Eve on 4chan.

And so, one year later…

One year anniversary

It’s been a year. Isn’t it funny how quickly time can pass when you’re not looking at it? In this case, it feels like I’ve been too busy to notice the months slip by. I think I’ve been having fun, too. It was a year ago that the internet was raging at Code Geass R2, making memes out of Charles and the legendary trainwreck episode; a year ago that I first clicked the “publish” button on a WordPress post, writing and rewriting less than 500 words on the last day of the summer holidays.

Looking back, though, it’s hardly felt like a journey at all. If anything, I’m just glad that I didn’t run from the prospective work and criticism and loss of free time, and end up missing out on something this satisfying.

A Two-Week Absence…but it’s for a good cause!

nodame-cantabile-planeI’m not scared of planes. Really!

Well, it’s a good cause for me at least. I’m confident that less than 10% of you have read this (or at least the last part), but regardless, time sure flew by: four months have already passed, and the event that I’ve been looking forward to since the beginning of high school is finally on the horizon. It’s going to be a long flight, the lack of cell phone service means that I’ll be off Twitter, and the schedule is packed enough that I’ll probably be away from the internet as well…but fear not! I wrote a few posts in advance and set them to publish in the future. They may not be anything too spectacular, but they should at least entertain, and I’ll get back on any comments that need replies when I get back.

But forgetting about that, it’ll definitely be a fun trip, and most likely a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Australia isn’t the kind of place that people normally go to, much like Canada, and I’m assuming that it has its own unique – if not somewhat familiar – charm (much like Canada). Time to see if that opera house lives up to the hype!

Ramblings

A New Year’s Introspection…of sorts

I say “of sorts” because, from the reading I’ve been doing around the ‘sphere, my introspection has already been done. No, it’s not like I wrote the post in advance – I have a bad habit of leaving blog posts until I actually need to write them – it’s just that someone else already transcribed my story as an anime fan for me. That person is usagijen of Scrumptious, and after reading her post on her growth as an anime fan through the medium of blogging, I realized that I had experienced quite the same thing. And with a new year beginning in less than twelve hours, I think I’m ready to take my next step forward.

The Internet and Communication: Socializing from the Comfort of a Laptop

Yes, I’m aware that she isn’t using a laptop, and no, I don’t know who she is.

A mere day after Christmas, Owen wrote something on what he saw as a damaged social life – how the internet changes the way we interact with people, and how our lives can change as a result of it. This, from what I’ve experienced, can be very true; why bother forcing yourself to talk about something you find uninteresting when all of your fellow bloggers and anime fans are waiting for you on Twitter and IRC? Why bother scouring your school for the most diligent fans when you’re already connected to some of leaders of the community? Those are two of the many questions that I’ve been asking myself recently, and I believe that Owen covered the topic in much detail; there’s little more that I can say to back up his point.

However, I don’t think we agree on everything, either. The internet, as I see it, is not a bad thing, and it’s certainly not something we should distrust or discredit. My thoughts on the matter are rather scattered and not too distinct, but while I can agree that common interests are treated more as a given for those of us who are active on the internet, I don’t think I can bring myself to look down on the method of communication, either.
