⑨ Moments of Anime #1: ef – a tale of melodies ep 6

And here we are: the final day. Did you really think I would pick anything else? After going on about it endlessly after it first aired, and after taking days to recover from the effects of a mere 22 minutes of animation, this was the one moment that I had planned from the start. It was quite possibly the climax of Yuuko’s story (I say possibly because I haven’t seen the final two episodes yet), and in my eyes, it was easily the most heart-stopping moment of the year.

Not unlike a jigsaw puzzle, the pieces of this little fairy tale are finally coming together – but the closer we reach to completion, the more mysterious the final image appears. Somewhere on the line between tragedy and salvation, the story and characters continue to develop, in a world dominated by both both boundless horrors and fantasy-fulfilling saviors. It is on this line that the characters have lived up until now, and whether in the past or the present, neither they nor the viewers know when salvation may arrive or when tragedy may strike.

After Miyako’s 99 Missed Calls scene in memories, I believe it was evident to all of us that there was more to ef than met the eye, especially in terms of psychology. Though based on an eroge and technically following the VN adaptation formula, it’s nearly indisputable that the characters in ef, both male and female, contain a considerable amount of psychological depth, and that their actions are often times unpredictable. Whether “unpredictable” means foolish, naive, courageous, or anything else is irrelevant; the point is that they all contain more depth than one would expect, and the depth of said characters is emphasized through the drama in the story.

This time, we witness first hand the state of mind of the show’s most twisted character: Akira Amamiya.

Fear the power of psychological breaking. We all knew this guy was messed up, but it looks like he’s messed up and smart, which is a bad combination for our tragic couple. It looks like this is the beginning of the end – and it’s an end that I’m both anticipating and dreading.

A mere week after the biggest twist of the series – and still one of my favourite scenes ever – the Kuze/Mizuki arc shoots forward in leaps and bounds. If you thought it couldn’t get any better, then…well, I suppose you were half wrong. Melodies hasn’t gotten better in my eyes, but then again, how could anything that I perceive as perfect possibly become better than perfect?

The story seemed pretty innocent so far, didn’t it? Considering the genre, as well as the first season, we all knew that a few heartbreaking twists were bound to come at some point – forgotten memories, a painful childhood, something of the sort. We’ve seen these things all too many times in Key anime to be surprised any more. On top of that, I myself assumed (and hoped) that we would get another awesome love triangle in the second season, because even though my choice was made from the first episode, I throughly enjoyed – in a perfectly ordinary manner – watching Kei and Miyako fight over Hiro. It added a little flair to an otherwise ordinary plot, and the romance overtones are something that can bring me to watch almost anything.

But this…this isn’t ordinary. Nor is it cliche, or romantic, or in any way moe. This is one of the best episodes of anime I’ve ever seen in my life, and this is serious business.
