Shira Oka is an original English dating sim that you might have heard of. It’s notable, sort of–the OP has real animation in it–but it otherwise flew under the radar in anime fandom (the indie game crowd might be different). Amagami has been on my radar for a while (since some people kept pointing out the amount of doujins the game was getting), but I’m a little underwhelmed by the first arc. By “underwhelmed” I mean that I didn’t melt into a puddle of kyaa~ and moe~.
So, it’s clear that I like the series – why wouldn’t I? I enjoy character games and dating sims and all of the other fluff, and it seems like Enterbrain is no stranger to simulated love (even if I gave True Love Story a 1/10 on MAL, I blame that on the adaptation). After going through the KimiKiss manga and doing a bit of background research, however, I realized that these adaptations are undertaking an extremely difficult task: turning a first-person dating sim into a coherent storyline to be experienced from the third person.

I could call myself a fan of OEL visual novels. True, I have never played one that genuinely impressed me outside of the comedy/satire genre, and I’m naturally biased toward the medium considering my own endeavour in it, but it’s safe to say that there are a few pleasant creations out there. Ren’Py has been around since 2004, and a lot of amateur writers and artists have tried their hand at the tedious but ultimately rewarding task of creating a visual novel.
Considering that the community has an ever-growing archive of Ren’Py-created games, it would seem as though everything is in order. As a consumer, however, this might not be the case. As much as I hate to say this, some developers might be trying to step into the professional world a bit too soon.

It’s very, very hard to get a good picture of Rika.
It all began while I was rewatching Honey and Clover. It’s a beautiful show, really, and I can guarantee that I’ll post on it at some point, but the painfully real relationships of the cast aren’t the focus of this post.
