⑨ Moments of Anime #8: H2O – Footprints in the Sand ep 08

by eternal on December 18, 2008

Remember this one? That crazy episode, right when things were getting good, where we were tossed into almost a full 22 minutes of mahou shoujo and other general nonsense that had absolutely nothing to do with the situation at hand? Well, I remember it, and I think there’s a part of me that looks back on it fondly.

The thing that I liked the most about this episode was the fact that it had a point. It was stupid, made very little sense, and was a general waste of time; but on the flip side, it was funny, it proved to be quite entertaining, and above all, it ended on a serious note. Watching Otoha fade away isn’t something that any VN fan could see without feeling something, somewhere – especially considering that the setting reminded me of AIR – and given the point in the story and the nature of Otoha’s character, I couldn’t help but get a little emotional. It was almost the equivalent of dedicating an entire Geass episode to something lighthearted and comedic, like Lelouch chasing after a cat that stole his mask, and ending it with a signature WTFPLOTTWIST. A plot twist would have been one thing, and comedy another, but putting the two together? I’m hesitant to call it an act of genious, but it’s an act of ingenuity nonetheless.

H2O has to be the most disappointed anime this year. I really thought it’d be fantastic.

@ M12: It definitely wasn’t a masterpiece, but I suppose the overall bizarreness of the plot caused a lot of mixed reactions. The best way to determine just how good or bad the story is would be to play the original game…but that might cause more than a few problems in itself ^^;
