Start of the Holiday Season (and other ramblings)

by eternal on December 1, 2008

My current desktop. Snow FTW!

Before you say it, allow me: obvious filler post is obvious. However, it’s the start of my personal favourite season of the year, and it also should mark a time of (minor) change for this blog. Whether or not it does, however, allow me to take a few minutes to talk about stuff you probably won’t care about, but ought to read anyhow.

And since I’m too lazy to provide more pictures, just search “snow” at Konachan or one of the usual places; you’d be surprised at how common a tag it is.

All right, first order of business: I apologize for the relative lack of original content lately. I had (and still have) no intent of becoming an episodic blogger, and while I do enjoy analyzing rambling about ef every week, I plan on doing more than that. I’ve been taking as many notes as I could about the blogosphere lately, and brainstorming some ideas about how to continue blogging in the future. …Not that any of this is really relevant, because I’d probably be too lazy to blog anything more than two shows at a time anyhow.

I suppose the first thing that crossed my mind was the fact that this site is now three months old. I don’t know about you, but if you ask me, that’s a lot of months. It’s a quarter of a year, a complete season of anime; that’s how long I’ve been in the blogosphere, typing up a few ordinary thoughts every couple days. There will be many more months for me and this site in the future, of course, but I certainly don’t want to stagnate – and that’s where the brainstorming comes in.

In terms of my specific plans for the future, I’d rather keep those secret. Why? Because my posts and writing style ought to speak for themselves; this is one case in which I don’t want to have to spell things out for people. However, with the completion really, really close to complete manuscript for The Ebon Pocket Watch, I should be able to free up quite a bit of time for the upcoming holidays, and my first goal is to get serious about blogging.

Maybe this is my promise to you, or maybe it’s just a way for me to force myself to act on my word, but either way, my goal is to move upward in this community, not downward. My writing may not be the greatest and my analytical skills might only be amateur at best, but I do have the dilligence to keep up with all of this – both the anime blogosphere and the otaku community as a whole – so you have my guarantee that by the start of the holidays I’ll be pouring everything I have into this site.

And yes, I do see the irony in talking so openly about my goals – the real “pros” never seem to reveal their thoughts too often – but I also believe strongly in the power of honesty in blogging, and I believe that with honesty, even the most seemingly bland topic can be saturated with opinion, thus making it interesting.

However, enough about me; let’s talk about Christmas! I don’t know about you, but as a fan of everything romance – be it KimiKiss or Honey and Clover – and as an equal fan of everything moe and Key (or any combination of the two), Christmas and snow and snowy Christmas Eves always get me thinking about one thing. I’m not quite sure what I’ll write about yet, but I do recall seeing some enlightening posts on Mega Megane Moe at some point in time discussing the nature of the appeal of moe, and I also chanced upon a certain essay which I always mean to read but never get around to, and I’ve spent at least a bit of time thinking about the concept of escapism to say the least. Like I said, while I’m not making any promises yet, I’m expecting the weeks leading up to Christmas to give me more ideas, and whenever inspiration strikes, I’ll write. Just don’t expect any manliness.

With that said, I suppose I should let you go on with your adventures on the interwebs. Once more, I’m left at the end of many of the things I wanted to accomplish, but better yet, the beginning of many more things that I intend on doing. Sepia Tears and Ephemeral Wings will still more than likely need a character designer and/or graphic artist, but otherwise to that, everything is set to progress smoothly. I’ve got my keyboard with me – I always do, actually, since it’s attached to my laptop – and I’m ready to write.

So enjoy the holiday season, folks. May the snow – or sun, wherever you live – treat you to a pleasant December, and hopefully by the start of the new year I’ll be able to make this place just a bit more interesting than a humble beginner’s blog. After all, time waits for no one, and in a world without Blick Winkel and gods that create time travelers, we’ve got no choice but to plough onward.

But I digress: this is an anime blog, not a place where I toss my self-motivation. So get out there and tell everyone you meet tomorrow to have a happy December, and ignore all of the confused looks you’ll probably get.

Holidays are coming soon…but sadly…so are my exams…
As a blogger who had been around for almost a year, I say 3 months is a good milestone. If you can keep updating and soon you can improve your writing skills and brainstorm ideas.
I do say you show start a figure review and attend anime type events that happens and talk about it…
Also talking about everyday life like going to the mall and buying these goods also would help.
Good posts won’t come out of nowhere…at least it’s a good start…
Well, I hope to see you at the otaku meet…

2 more weeks and I’ll be back home. I don’t know what to say about blogging in general because I’m more often than not lacking content and going into daily rants and such. All I can generally say is you’ve done a great job so far. At the moment I’m kind of lost for words, but hopefully you’ll make it to the blogmeet on the 19th so we can chat properly.

This is the first time I’ve visited your blog, but congratulations on the milestone. I’ve been blogging for 2-3 years and I still feel like I don’t know what I’m doing. I’ve always wanted to be more analytical, but find I can’t. Anyway, I love snow.

Congrats for three months. Your blog looks very good. I hope that my blog will also look good after 3 months. I’ve started blogging recently and it still looks too raw ^^

Winter is a nice season. But because I live in a city, I can’t enjoy it to its fullest, because there’s nothing like snow, just snowbroth.

@ animekritik: Great, I think I just lost the battle before it even began OTL.

@ M12: Ignoring the rather entertaining typo, you’re right, time sure does fly. I still feel like a beginner ^^;

@ Rin: I’ll definitely be trying my hand at figure photography whenever I get my DSLR (probably for my birthday in February), but I should probably try to study a bit of general photography first…

@ Blowfish: I guess that’s one good thing about Toronto: we never have to worry about a winter without snow.

@ GNdynames: I expect to be at the meet; it’ll be nice to get to see all of you guys IRL, though I hope I don’t wind up disappointing anyone lol. I’m one of those people that types/writes a lot better than he speaks ^^;

@ ron~: Oh, I will, trust me ;P

@ super rats: I guess you can’t be good at everything; you’ve already got the figure photography scene pretty much dominated, so I suppose it’s only fair that people like IKnight and ghostlightning get a chance to dominate in analytical writing.
And yes, snow FTW!

@ Matteas: It sure feels strange talking to someone newer to the community than me. Good luck in the future! Blogging isn’t quite as hard a task as it first appears, once you get into it; you’ve just gotta make sure you don’t get lazy.

For what it’s worth, moe is something I only really understand from the outside (well, most of the time) and I’m always bound to write about it with an agenda, probably a facetious one. Leaving the subject there would be like only learning about India through British Victorian writers.

Anyhow, thank you for the good wishes for the holiday season, and the same back to you.

@ IKnight

There are some who think that British writers are precisely the best sources for learning about India (for example, me!, I think that!)..

@ ETERNAL

escapism is definitely a part of it.
