Lucky Star OVA

It’s a bit late, but better late than never, right? With this weekend being the first weekend of the fall season, I figured, why not kick start this whole thing with probably the most eagerly anticipated OVA of the season? No, this was probably the most anticipated of the year – and now that it’s out, we finally get to see what Konata and company have been up to since September 2007.

I just had to put this somewhere.

Greatest moment of the OVA, period.

My opinion of this piece is actually quite straightforward and probably won’t take too long to explain: it’s simple, but fun. Going into this, I naturally (and foolishly) let my hopes up – after all, we haven’t seen any Lucky Star in an entire year. Being a fan of the original series, I expected a “sequel” of epic proportions, with side-splitting comedy equivalent to the likes of School Rumble and Seto no Hanayome episode 20. Was I disappointed? Yes – but only slightly.

Truth be told, the Lucky Star OVA is precisely what one would expect from an OVA – a small, irrelevant side story that either helps flesh out the characters or that’s just plain fun to watch. In this case, considering the nature of Lucky Star, it was the latter. Is this a bad thing? Of course not. While (in my opinion, at least) nowhere near as funny as the main series, it was certainly an entertaining way to spend 40 minutes, and I can’t think of anything specific that they really could have done better. I mean, it’s Lucky Star. It’s a show about nothing. What could possibly make it better or worse? The OVA was exactly what it should have been: a short collection of stories that didn’t make it into the anime. It wasn’t anything revolutionary, but it was fun, and that’s really all a person would expect from a show like this.

Anyway, at the moment I believe it’s only been subbed by an amateur from Crunchy Roll - not the best, but it does the job. If you feel like holding out then go ahead, but if not, drop by Tokyo Toshokan and pick it up now; if you liked the original Lucky Star, then you won’t regret it. Just don’t expect any timotei or balsamic vinegar.

The live action Lucky Channel sequence was out of sync and therefore RAW so I couldn’t understand it, but there was at least one thing that I could read.
